Berlin University Alliance X-Student Research Group: AAA Rational Approximation in Computational Photonics
This X-Student Research Group is project within the Berlin University Alliance (BUA). With the X-Student Research Groups, Berlin University Alliance supports research teams of junior scientists and students. The goal is to involve students in ongoing research projects at any of the four BUA institutions, their Clusters of Excellence, Collaborative Research Centers, and other partners. This allows students to gain research experience early on in Berlin's integrated research environment. As leaders of these groups, junior researchers are encouraged to conduct research projects with students based on their ongoing work. The X-Student Research Groups are implemented in the form of research seminars and usually run for one semester.
The AAA algorithm enables efficient approximation by rational functions and has recently attracted significant attention in numerical mathematics and various application fields. The optical response of photonic systems exhibits poles in the complex frequency plane associated with resonances, making these systems particularly well suited for rational approximation and allowing key physical quantities to be extracted directly. In particular, this project investigates whether the AAA algorithm can solve selected photonic problems more efficiently than commonly used methods.
